Secrets, resentments and buried memories float to the surface in David Harrower’s adaptation of his play Blackbird.

Rooney Mara stars as Una, a young woman desperately attempting to reclaim and redeem her past. When Una was 13, she ran away with her much older neighbour Ray (Ben Mendelsohn), who was subsequently arrested and imprisoned for having sex with a minor, while Una faced shame and judgement. Years later, Una discovers a photo of Ray in an article, and tracks him down to his workplace to discover he has a new name and a new family. Her abrupt reappearance in Ray’s life threatens to destroy all that he has rebuilt for himself, and derail Una’s own stability and sense of self.

Based on Scottish playwright David Harrower’s much celebrated, Olivier Award-winning play Blackbird, Benedict Andrews’ UNA stars Academy Award-nominated Rooney Mara (CAROL, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) and Emmy-nominated Ben Mendelsohn (television’s “Bloodline”, ANIMAL KINGDOM, STARRED UP, STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE) as protagonists Una and Ray.

UNA refuses to take the easy road in exploring the most feared and damaging forms of unequal love.

"Such stories have, of course, long provided sensationalist fodder for television series like Law & Order: SVU." But where Una diverges from television procedurals and tabloid tales is in its willingness to delve into both parties' psyches. Mara and Mendelsohn do yeoman's work in this respect, allowing us to understand the manifold impulses at work behind their characters' actions.' theatre critic, Ben Brantley
