After an overwhelming response to our food drive on the opening weekend of I, Daniel Blake, in the lead-up to Christmas we will continue to collect non-perishable food and grocery donations for Foodbank WA, an organisation set up to source surplus and donated groceries.

More than 2,500 charities and 1,500 schools collect the donated food and distribute it to adults and children in need as prepared meals, food hampers and emergency parcels. The food rescued by Foodbank provides, on average, 166,000 meals a day.

I, DANIEL BLAKE is the Palme d’Or winning film from acclaimed British filmmaker, Ken Loach (Jimmy’s Hall, The Angels’ Share, The Wind That Shakes the Barley) and writer Paul Laverty.

It centres on a middle aged carpenter who requires state welfare after injuring himself and befriends a single mother in a similar scenario.

Daniel Blake, 59, (Dave Johns) has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State.
He crosses paths with single mother Katie (Hayley Squires) and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern-day Britain.

I, DANIEL BLAKE is an incredibly moving and powerful film and Loach's finest exploration of social realism, with critics labelling it the most important film of the year.
