East meets West with devastating consequences in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s production of Puccini’s deeply poignant opera. Antonio Pappano conducts an impressive cast led by much-loved soprano Ermonela Jaho (singing Cio-Cio-San at Covent Garden for the first time). The music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by callous US naval officer (Marcelo Puente) of his innocent bride.
Directors: Moshe Leiser, Patrice Caurier. Conductor: Antonio Pappano. Cast: Ermonela Jaho, Marcelo Puente. Duration: Approx 2h45 incl. interval. Sung in Italian, with English subtitles.
