The most anticipated Japanese anime film of the season, Fireworks, based on the film by Shunji Iwai, the original creator, follows in the tradition of box office hits Your Name and A Silent Voice.
During a hot summer vacation, two boys, Norimichi and Yusuke, have a swimming race. The winner’s prize is to take the boy’s crush, Nazuna, to see the fireworks. Yusuke wins, and Norimichi is left in regret. However, he finds a mysterious ball in the water, which he holds on to. Nazuna tells Norimichi that she was going to ask out whoever won. However, her true goal is to “elope” with the winner and run away from her family.
Seeing Nazuna struggle and frustrated by his uselessness, Norimichi throws the ball he found into the water. Suddenly, he finds himself back at the moment of the swimming race.
Norimichi now must repeat the day over and over, to reach the best ending for Nazuna.(Japanese language with English subtitles)
