2376 CZECH/SLOVAK FF OPENING NIGHT - THE TEACHER

From Oscar-nominated director/ writer Jan Hrebejk, The Teacher is a wildly entertaining black comedy, sprinkled with humour and irony inspired by the true story of a Communist era school teacher. Set in Bratislava in years 1983-1984, it examines the abuse of power at a high school. The film tells the story of Mrs Drazdechova, a terrifying teacher who heads the local Communist party and uses her pupils to manipulate their parents for her own personal benefit.

The Teacher describes a secret meeting between the school’s head teacher and the parents of students taught by the unscrupulous educator where the divide between the teacher’s supporters and detractors are brought into focus.

Each autumn, middle-aged Comrade Drazdechova greets her new class by asking them to introduce themselves and share what their parents do for a living. She manipulates her students and their parents to provide her with favours, such as a free perm at a hairdresser or a lamp repair, in exchange for information regarding student assessment that ensures the compliant student’s academic success.

What ensues is that a divide is created between the parents who refuse to be manipulated and other parents who have improved their children’s grades through their unquestioning compliance with Comrade Drazdechova’s demands. (Slovak with English subtitles)
