In his own right, Director Peter Bogdanovich is a master of cinema having made such classic works as The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon and What’s Up Doc? Couple him up with the life and times of one of the great – if not the greatest – screen comedian of all time, Buster Keaton – and you’ve got a real movie!
Bogdanovich’s portrait of Keaton is just fabulous. Filled with great stories from the likes of Mel Brooks, Werner Herzog, Carl Reiner, Leonard Maltin and others, the film goes right back to the beginning with Buster as an infant being incorporated into his parent’s slapstick vaudeville act. It’s here where the great man learned the pratfalls and stage techniques that are still hilarious and utterly jaw-dropping. There’s riotous and pristine clips aplenty from Sherlock Jnr, The General and tons more in lovely work, but Bogdanovich doesn’t shy away from the personal problems that plagued Keaton’s life and that saw him descend to very sad showbiz lows.
The Great Buster is enormously enjoyable viewing and a must for all lovers of cinema.
