Yayoi Kusama is one of the most successful visual artists in the world (her exhibition at the Broad Museum, Los Angeles, reportedly had 150,000 people joining the digital ticket queue in five minutes), her works are instantly recognisable thanks to her iconic use of colour, form, polka dots and mirrors
KUSAMA - INFINITY explores Yayoi Kusama’s radical artistic vision and fierce determination to become a world-renowned artist. At 89 she is celebrated for her colourful polka-dot motifs and her immensely popular Infinity Mirrored Rooms. However, her critical and commercial success comes after decades of struggle against a traumatic upbringing, lifelong mental illness, a conservative Japanese art world, and racism and sexism in the West.
Filmed for more than a decade, Heather Lenz’s debut documentary shows how Kusama overcame countless odds to create a legacy of artwork that spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, poetry, and novels and has endured to become the top-selling female artist in the world.
Under Lenz’s direction what emerges is a story of an artist that is both moving and inspiring, and which will resonate with all audiences.
