Arcadia and Luna Palace Cinemas presents a Christmas celebration that 2021 deserves. ‘A Very Scary Christmas’ The Scary Of Sixty-First. Featuring a Livestream pre-recorded Q&A with Dasha Nekrasova, hosted by Osman Faruqi! Join us from 6:15pm for a special event screening of The Scary of Sixty-First, a gleefully deranged interrogation of our conspiracy-fuelled times. Shot during the festive season only a few months after Jeffrey Epstein’s death, this brash, gutsy and morbidly funny film is driven by a palpable outrage and an acutely self-aware sense of the zeitgeist.

Grab a $10 Good Tides Seltzer (Dasha's a fan of the hard seltzer) from the bar while enjoying a complimentary slice of Siena's pizza (while stocks last) and awesome tunes from DJ Matty G on entry. Plus, a pre-recorded Q&A with writer/director/star Dasha Nekrasova, also known as the host of lightning-rod podcast Red Scare and her roles in Succession (HBO) and The Serpent (Netflix). The event is hosted by Osman Faruqi (Award-winning journalist and host of 7AM and The Culture podcasts.

Two roommates' lives are upended after discovering that their curiously affordable Manhattan apartment harbours a dark secret in Dasha Nekrasova's transgressive conspiratorial thriller.  The Scary of Sixty-First shot on grainy 16mm film and cheekily referencing everything from 1970s horror to today’s news, ramps up the tension while keeping its tongue firmly planted in its cheek. Driven by a palpable outrage and an acutely self-aware sense of the zeitgeist, Nekrasova’s film was the winner of Best First Feature at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival.

Critics are saying...

“An audacious take on genre cinema that confronts contemporary issues such as global power structures, sexual abuse, conspiracy theories and the dark corners of the internet in a wildly twisted, witty and subversive manner. Perhaps in recognition that polite decorum may no longer be an effective tactic in sparking discourse around these burning issues.” Berlinale Jury

"There’s alchemy at work in Dasha Nekrasova’s debut film “The Scary of Sixty-First,” the kind that can turn what’s old into what’s new. Equal parts ’70s-style paranoia thriller es Wide Shut” homage, and empathetic critical commentary on the conspiracy theories craze, this hallucinatory pastiche is even more than the sum of its cinematically riveting parts. It feels like one of the few genuine attempts at understanding this dislocating moment and the many people who have lost themselves within it." Indiewire

Not for the faint-hearted.
