Following huge critical and box office success we are pleased to present limited screenings of the highly anticipated black and white version of PARASITE!
A life-long dream for director Bong Joon-Ho to create a film in the black & white format, this version of PARASITE was created prior to the film’s premiere in Cannes, where it won the Palme d’Or, and will now be shared with audiences.
“I'm extremely happy to present PARASITE in black and white and have it play on the big screen. It will be fascinating to see how the viewing experience changes when an identical film is presented in black and white. I watched the black and white version twice now, and at time the film felt more like a fable and gave me the strange sense that I was watching a story from old time. The second time I watched it, the film felt more realistic and sharp as if I was being cut by a blade. It also further highlighted the actors' performances and seemed to revolve more around the characters. I had many fleeting impressions of this new version, but I do not wish to define them before it is presented. I hope everyone in the audience can compare their own experiences from the colour version and find their own path the Parasite in black and white."
- Director Bong Joon-Ho
Bong regular Song Kang-ho (The Host, Snowpiercer) plays Ki-taek, whose family of four is close, but hopelessly unemployed. Without prospects, they hustle as best they can to scrape up the money to survive in their subterranean apartment. Hope comes in the form of an unusual offer. The son, Ki-woo, is recommended for a very well-paid tutoring job. Though Ki-woo lacks a university degree, it turns out his sister Ki-jung is a master forger and soon, bearing a fake degree, he is being interviewed at the luxurious home of the very wealthy Park family. Ki-woo gets the job as a tutor and quickly realises that the Park family could well prove to be the solution to his family’s money problems.
With every frame beautifully composed, PARASITE vividly contrasts the two families using humour, mystery and a creeping sense of tension. Bong once again skillfully fuses genre elements with social critique in a wildly entertaining, visually extraordinary and intoxicating manner.
