From its World premiere at the Festival de Cannes screening comes one of the most highly anticipated and eagerly awaited films of the year Elvis! The dazzling new film from Oscar-nominated visionary director, producer, and writer Baz Luhrman will screen at Luna Leederville, Windsor and Luna on SX from June 23.
The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Austin Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge).
Starring alongside Hanks and Butler, are award-winning theatre actress Helen Thomson (Top of the Lake: China Girl), Richard Roxburgh (Moulin Rouge!), Luke Bracey (Hacksaw Ridge), Natasha Bassett (Hail, Caesar!), David Wenham (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Xavier Samuel (Adore), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog).
Also in the cast, is Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things,), alongside Australian actors Leon Ford (Gallipoli), Kate Mulvany (The Great Gatsby), Gareth Davies (Peter Rabbit), Charles Grounds (Crazy Rich Asians), Josh McConville (Fantasy Island), and Adam Dunn (Home and Away).
To play additional iconic musical artists in the film, Luhrmann cast singer/songwriter Yola, model Alton Mason, Austin, Texas native Gary Clark Jr., and artist Shonka Dukureh.
Baz Luhrmann made history at the Festival de Cannes by being the only director to show two feature films at the opening with Moulin Rouge! in 2001 which was running in Competition and The Great Gatsby in 2013. In 1992, he was a sensation at the 45th edition of the Festival with his first film Strictly Ballroom which was screened in the Un Certain Regard section.
