Filmmaker Julien Temple examines the explosive life and career of Shane MacGowan, lead singer of the Pogues.

Executed in a full-tilt, hell-for-leather manner recalling the frenzy of the Pogues’ performances, CROCK OF GOLD combines interviews, glimpses of MacGowan today, archive footage plus a torrent of original animation to evoke the splendour and squalor of a very singular talent.

In this cinematic exploration of Shane MacGowan’s story, Julien Temple’s film CROCK OF GOLD details Shane’s explosive existence, from his salad days, growing up in Ireland, to time spent on the mean streets of London and embracing the punk scene. To forming the Pogues and the conquering the known universe, we discover MacGowan’s passions, his humour & deep knowledge of music, history, spirituality & popular culture. For this is Shane’s story. A vision of the world through the eyes of the great punk poet himself and an intimate cast of close friends and family members, all channelled through Temple’s inimitable and eternally vibrant lens.

The film’s prime achievement is to illuminate MacGowan as an Irish-born artist inspired by political history and cultural experience. And once those great Pogues songs are at last heard in all their glory, you understand the claims made for MacGowan as a modern bard – and grieve for the brevity of his brilliant, breakneck career.

WINNER Special Jury Prize,  at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.

“A riotous piece of storytelling." — Screen International

“TERRIFIC. In the upper echelon of recent rock docs. Makes a great, sober case for MacGowan as a real poet, an ex-pat national statesman, and someone who might have changed ideas about how traditional music and rock can meld for all time.” Variety

“A jug-eared, snaggle-toothed, whiskey-sodden fireball of poetry and profanity, MacGowan was a force of nature in his Pogues prime, revitalizing traditional Irish folk music with punk energy, scabrous humour, political bite and contemporary diaspora stories.” Hollywood Reporter

“Touching, thought-provoking, inspiring and ceaselessly entertaining … worth your time and money.” The Times

“His stated aim and success in preserving Irish music and culture through times of turmoil is the heart of the piece. “The transition from punk bands to The Pogues’ contemporary reimaginings of Irish trad is great to see.” DMovies

★★★★ Stars “this is a tale told with love, compassion and humour...Potent, poetic and a right laugh – three things Shane MacGowan always was, and always will, be.” NME

“Irascible, intractable, infuriating, fascinating, appalling, galling, bellicose, comatose, cantankerous, cadaverous, impossible, unstoppable - filming Shane is like flying through a radioactive rainbow, but in the end, there is an inner 'Crock of Gold' waiting to be discovered.” Julien Temple, Director
