The highlight of the night is Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated adaptation of Queer, the novella by Beat icon William S. Burroughs. Premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival, this is Guadagnino’s most personal and long-dreamed-of project to date. Known for acclaimed films like Call Me by Your Name and Challengers, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker delivers a bold and vulnerable take on Burroughs’ autobiographical novel.

Starring Daniel Craig (Knives Out), Jason Schwartzman (Quiz Lady), Drew Starkey (The Hate U Give), and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), Queer is a hallucinogenic odyssey of desire, identity, and self-discovery. Craig delivers a captivating performance as Lee, a middle-aged, lonely expatriate navigating postwar Mexico City’s gay bars, streets, and underbelly of illicit substances. Lee’s journey to the Amazon in search of telepathic ayahuasca—alongside the handsome, bi-curious Allerton (Starkey)—is marked by unexpected encounters and profound realizations.

Adapted by Justin Kuritzkes (Challengers), Guadagnino’s Queer balances faithfulness to Burroughs’ work with daring reinterpretation. With Craig’s fully lived-in portrayal of Lee, this film is an exploration of obsession, vulnerability, and enlightenment you won’t want to miss.

Reviews

This hypnotic, often moving film speaks eloquently — in some scenes, graphically — about queer carnal ecstasy, and about the difficulty of its pursuit. It is a remarkable achievement.
Financial Times
It is a remarkably beautiful portrait of agony, anchored by Craig’s remarkably understated performance.
Globe and Mail
Guadagnino’s filmmaking has never been more vivid.
