Emilia Pérez
Synopsis
From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard (Dheepan, The Sisters Brothers) comes Emilia Pérez, an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations.
Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. Starring Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz, this at once pop opera, narco thriller and gender affirmation drama earned its ensemble cast of women a joint Best Actress award at Cannes.
Overqualified and undervalued, Rita (Saldaña) is a lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas (Gascón) hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realise a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being.
Manitas becomes Emilia and creates a new life for herself, leaving her wife Jessi (Gomez) and eventually embarking on a new relationship with Epifanía (Paz). Together, the two work to help the loved ones of cartel victims find their bodies. That is, until her past begins to catch up and threatens to unravel everything she has worked to build.
