Park Chan-wook — the visionary behind Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden and Oldboy — brings his unmistakable style to a razor-sharp adaptation of a crime novel by the legendary Donald E. Westlake, whose work has inspired classics such as Point Blank and Payback. Transposed to present-day South Korea, the story unfolds in a world where seniority offers little protection, ambition bites hard, and the search for employment is nothing short of a battlefield.
At the centre of the tale is Man-soo (Lee), a man who once had everything: a devoted wife, two gifted children, two cheerful dogs and the forest-wrapped home of his childhood, lovingly bought back after years of success. After 25 years at Solar Paper — capped by his crowning as Pulp Man of the Year in 2019 — he is abruptly dismissed, thrusting his life into freefall. Mortgage payments slip out of reach, his wife Mi-ri (Son Yejin) urges him to sell the house, and every path forward seems to narrow.
Determined to secure a coveted job at Moon Paper, Man-soo realises he is not the only candidate with impeccable credentials. Desperation sharpens into ingenuity, and ingenuity into something far darker. He creates a fake paper company, contacts each of his rivals, invites them to a meeting, and one by one begins to eliminate the competition.
Co-written by Park Chan-wook, Lee Kyoung-mi, Jahye Lee and Toronto’s own Don McKellar, No Other Choice is a chilling, darkly funny satire of workplace politics and the ruthless hunger for status. With meticulous precision and a wicked sense of irony, Park reminds us that under the right pressures, even the most ordinary person can be pushed to extraordinary extremes.
