Perth alt rockers Jebediah were a breed apart in the halcyon days of the late-90s and early-2000s Australian indie music scene. Built from a wealth of archival and home-movie footage ranging from the band’s humble high school beginnings through to the current day, as well as firsthand perspectives from local music icons such as Tim Rogers, Phil Jamieson and Janet English, Arlo Dean Cook’s documentary is a rocking roller-coaster ride and a candid cautionary tale about the price of fame.

Jebediah: Are We OK?

Kristen Stewart’s splashy Cannes-premiering directorial debut poetically adapts writer Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir.

Lidia (an astonishing Imogen Poots) only feels whole when she’s in the water. Kicking through lap after lap, she can temporarily float free of the cold, rageful father who sexually abused her and her older sister Claudia (Thora Birch) while their apathetic mother turned away. Out of the pool, Lidia flounders, ruining her college swimming scholarship with booze, drugs and reckless sex and lashing out contemptuously at anyone who shows her kindness. But when she joins a collaborative creative writing class led by 

 author and countercultural hero Ken Kesey (Jim Belushi), Lidia finds the same fluid escape in writing. She’s back in her lane – focused, flourishing.

As an actor, Kristen Stewart has been one of cinema’s most subtle, fascinating interpreters of interiority. So it makes sense that her directorial debut, an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s visceral 2011 memoir, is no average creative biopic. Eschewing unnecessary exposition, Stewart invites comparisons to Terrence Malick as she tells Lidia’s story in intense, elliptical vignettes that ebb and flow on currents of memory, while Poots is as tender and fierce onscreen as she is dreamlike and sardonic in voiceover.

A sprawling tale of greed, betrayal, and revenge plays out amid the bucolic splendour of the French countryside in Claude Berri’s masterly two-film adaptation of a literary work by the legendary Marcel Pagnol.

The sun-dappled beauty of the Provence countryside belies dark motivations, in the first installment of Claude Berri’s monumental pastoral tragedy. When the naively idealistic tax collector Jean Cadoret (Gérard Depardieu) unexpectedly inherits a family farm, he leaves the city for a new life in the agrarian community where his mother, Florette, grew up—though she moved away decades ago. His neighbours, however, the scheming Ugolin (Daniel Auteuil) and his proud uncle César Soubeyran (Yves Montand), have plotted to divert the flow of water away from Jean’s land. , acclaimed writer/director Pascal Bonitzer brings his unique panache to Georges Simenon’s beloved Parisian detective Inspector Maigret, as he attempts to solve the murder of a former diplomat with a long-held secret.

Inspector Maigret (four-time César nominee Denis Podalydès, in a tremendous performance) is urgently summoned to the Quai d'Orsay: a former ambassador has been found shot dead by his long-serving housekeeper (Anne Alvaro, 

). But rather than contact the police, she has followed diplomatic protocols by first informing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Forewarned that he will find a series of salacious letters – and cautioned to be discrete - Maigret heads to the victim’s opulent apartment. He finds no forensic evidence at the crime scene, but certainly, the letters prove startling – secret, decades-spanning correspondence between the ambassador and the Princess of Vuynes, whose own husband, by strange coincidence, has also just died…
