Such a Resounding Silence (Un Silence si Bruyant) Q&A Screening

Japanese documentary filmmaker Kazuhiro Sôda’s latest film, 

, takes place in the coastal town of Ushimado, where a clowder of street cats live at Gokogu shrine, a traditional place of worship for those who have died in conflict. Peaceful on the surface, the shrine is also the epicentre of a sensitive issue that divides the local community.

While some local residents volunteer their time to take care of the cats, others are disturbed by their mess. Sôda observes their co-existence with kindness, precision and occasional involvement. Quietly charming and beautifully filmed, the film takes the time to appreciate not only the kindheartedness of Ushimado’s community but the beauty of the natural world.

An unassuming man in 1980’s Ireland must grapple with his conscience in the face of an overwhelming moment of insight in Tim Mielant's supremely confident adaptation of Claire Keegan’s Booker Prize-nominated 2021 novella. 

The film reveals truths about Ireland's Magdalene laundries - horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform "fallen young women." Set in New Ross, Wexford, in the run up to Christmas, where coal merchant Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) is working hard to keep his clients supplied before for a hard winter sets in; a quiet, introspective man, he has a tender relationship with his wife Eileen (Eileen Walsh), and is devoted to their five daughters. Amidst the profound social change and political turmoil of post-war Japan, a bold generation of avant-garde artists emerged in the 1960s, redefining the boundaries of art through experimental photography, graphic design, underground theatre, performance art and radical Butoh dance—forever transforming the global art landscape. 

The 1960s era in Japan was a time of profound social change, political unrest and student protests. The turbulent times of the postwar era inspired an artistic explosion in Japan, with the emergence of a revolutionary scene of avant-garde artists who pioneered many disciplines: experimental and erotic photography, “Angura” theatre and underground street performances, apocalyptic Butoh dance, surreal illustrations and seminal graphic design.

A new aesthetic of photography was born: “Are, Bure, Boke” (rough, dark and out of focus), pioneered by Moriyama Daidō and the Provoke magazine photographers. Araki beautified bondage and Hosoe Eikoh sublimated the male body. Ishiuchi Miyako captured her experience of American military bases. Kawada Kikuji’s era-defining photobook The Map captured the poignancy of Hiroshima’s trauma.

Samurai Cop (1991)

Wild at Heart + Blue Velvet

Part remake, part sequel to the original,

Evil Dead II

Whiplash + Sound of Metal
