Synopsis

Wimmin's Work is a new collection of audio, audio-visual and photographic stories documenting the stories of ten Western Australian women. A cohort of early career and re-emerging creatives were commissioned to capture the historical and contemporary experiences of women living and working in Western Australia as part of a paid content and mentoring opportunity. Presented in partnership with Women in Media WA and supported by the Department of Communities Women’s Grants for a Stronger Future.

Barbara: The Freo Feminist
Lucy Torvaldsen | 12 min

Fed up with 1950s Catholic patriarchy, Barbara Darling landed in a psych ward, then hitchhiked to Perth. Marriage and motherhood nearly broke her—until running, activism, and uplifting others brought her back to life.

My Mother, The Trailblazer
Jo-Ann Lim | 8 min

Beew Lan Lim, one of Perth’s first Asian women lawyers, faced racism and sexism in 1970s Australia. Despite barriers, she mentored others, supported her family, and inspired her daughters to pursue law.

Sacrifices For A Better Life
Cindy Cartojano| 4 min

Cindy Cartojano honours her mother Loreta, one of many Filipino migrant women who left everything behind for a better life. Her photo story sheds light on their sacrifices, resilience, and often-unspoken struggles.

Navigating A Man’s World
Madigan Landry6 min

Capt. Carol Dooley broke barriers in male-dominated industries, from mining to maritime, becoming WA’s first female international ship master. A true pioneer, she’s now honoured in the WA Women’s Hall of Fame.

Working FIFO
Ophélie Barbeau|4 min

This photo story captures the lives of women in WA’s FIFO mining industry, revealing their insights on community, work-life balance, and the challenge of defining “home” while living between mining camps and distant lives.

The Art & The Science of the Tingles
Sarah Drummond |4 min

Dr Elizabeth Edmonds, a palaeoecologist and artist, explores deep time through ancient pollen and charcoal. Her 2023 Dahl Fellowship inspired A Tale of Two Trees, an exhibition blending science and art to honour WA’s native flora.

Queen of Canning River
Kate Dunn | 5 min

The extraordinary journey of Pat Hart, the heartbeat of the Canning River.

The Juggler of Many Roles
Frances (Frankie) Gray|6 min

With grit, heart and flair, Zoe is a mother, lawyer, activist, go-go dancer and more—constantly redefining herself. Her latest mission: championing positive male role models to help build a healthier, more equal society.

Pink Rabbit
Susie Conte, Suzanne Worner|5 min

Stephanie runs Pink Rabbit, a welcoming, female-led sex shop in Perth where people of all ages—even into their 80s—feel safe exploring pleasure. It’s a modern, wholesome story of community, comfort, and sexuality.
