Tremors

This 1990 comedy monster movie (and love letter to 1950s sci-fi horror like It Came From Outer Space), stars Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward as a pair of handymen living in a small desert community who discover the cause of some disturbing, hard-to-explain phenomena - massive prehistoric worm-like creatures that live under the desert, reaching up and grabbing anything they need for food. As the creatures' appetites improve, the town is cut off from the outside world and our heroes must traverse the desert to get to safety.
