Tokyo Nights: Angel's Egg
Book Tickets
Synopsis
From Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), this anime cult treasure resurfaces in a luminous 4K restoration.
Angel’s Egg has endured in film history as a bona fide cult classic in the anime community, garnering countless fan theories, rumours and interpretations. Baroque and visually arresting, the film is set in an obscure, underwater dystopia, where a young, pale, white-haired girl wanders the ruins. She carries with her precious cargo in the form of a large egg, which she believes will hatch an angel. She encounters a boy soldier who joins her travels, their destination unknown. Mysterious and cryptic, Oshii’s experimental arthouse debut elides simple explanation, but is rich with existential symbolism and allegory. Largely inaccessible for many years, this stunning 4K restoration should be seen on the big screen.

Reviews
Amano’s artwork, normally flattened and simplified for animation ease, appears in full floridity, his hand visible in watercolour and ink blotches.
One of the great artistic achievements of both anime and symbolist filmmaking.
