Synopsis

Australian Premiere

From acclaimed director Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers) comes the quietly profound drama, A Long Winter, an adaption of Colm Tóibín’s novel that follows a young man whose world is thrust into uncertainty when his mother vanishes into the wilderness.

In 1951, high in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Mike (Fred Hechinger, Gladiator II) watches as his mother Louise (Caitríona Balfe, Outlander) becomes increasingly disillusioned with the isolated and suffocating life her husband Lester (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, The Bear) has created for their family. When she suddenly disappears into the snow-covered wilderness, Mike is left to face the void she leaves behind. In the unforgiving winter search for his mother, Mike is led towards an unexpected reckoning that quietly reshapes his world and opens the door to a new understanding of himself.

Filled with breathtaking cinematography of the vast, unforgiving and beautiful snowy landscapes that mirror the emotional distance between Mike and his father, A Long Winter is a quietly devastating reckoning of loneliness and the unexpected tenderness found amongst grief.
