BFF26: Hamlet

Retrospective

Celebrating its 30^th Anniversary, this four-time Oscar® nominated masterpiece by director-actor Kenneth Branagh is a gripping and visually stunning adaptation of the classic tragedy. Utilising a refreshed 19^th century setting, while preserving the original Elizabethan English dialogue, Branagh breathes new life into the tragic tale of the Prince of Denmark alongside a stunning Ophelia (Kate Winslet).

After his father’s death, Prince Hamlet is horrified to find his mother Gertrude (Julie Christie) hastily betrothed to his uncle Claudius (Derek Jacobi). Already overwhelmed with the looming prospect of war with neighbouring Norway and, egged on by the ghost of his father who reveals Claudius to be his killer, Hamlet dances with madness in his pursuit of justice as his house falls into the control of his uncle, the usurper.

Featuring gorgeous visuals, gripping performances, masterful direction and a stellar soundtrack, this critically acclaimed adaptation is regarded as one of Branagh’s greatest works in his distinguished career.
