The Metropolitan Opera’s 2026 Live in HD season concludes with a live transmission of Gabriela Lena Frank’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, with a libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. A fresh take on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, the opera follows Frida (mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard) as she leaves the underworld on the Day of the Dead to reunite with Diego (baritone Carlos Álvarez). The iconic couple relives their passionate, tumultuous love before bidding the land of the living a final farewell.
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, described as a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). Inspired by Frida and Diego’s paintings, the vibrant new production is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker.
This performance is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to cinemas worldwide.
