Portrait of a Lady on Fire | M

Winner of the Best Screenplay and Queer Palm at Cannes, Céline Sciamma’s acclaimed Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a ravishing period romance set in 18th-century France. Painter Marianne is commissioned to create a wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman reluctant to marry, and as the pair spend time together, their formal arrangement slowly blossoms into an intense and forbidden love. A deeply affecting exploration of desire, memory and the female gaze, it has become a modern classic of queer cinema.
