Synopsis

Fran follows the titular heroine (Noni Hazlehurst) who, following her divorce, leaves her family in pursuit of her own life.

Tight performances dominate and Noni Hazlehurst won the 1985 AFI award for best actress while Annie Byron garnered best actress in a supporting role.

Meanwhile Glenda Hambly won the 1986 Australian Writers' Guild award and 1985 AFI best screenplay award.

Alongside Shame - also screening at this year's festival - Fran is a remarkable example of Australian storytelling and the representation of women and gender on our screens.

2025 marks the 40th anniversary of this award winning title.
