Synopsis

Pioneering performance artist Stelarc has been working since the early 1970s.

Beginning with installations and performances that involved the artist ‘defying gravity’ through suspending himself and moving to explorations of machine and flesh, augmenting his body with technologies and digital interfaces.

In Stelarc Suspending Disbelief the filmmakers follow the artist’s career over more than fifty years at the cutting edge of performance.

Archive footage and documentation materials are combined with interviews and discussions as Stelarc discusses the nature of art, the human body, disability, physical and virtual augmentation, punctuating complex and sometimes confrontational ideas with his gleeful laugh, charming presence and inspiring manner.

Please note this film contains images of nudity, bodily performance and body modification.
